To qualify for Social Security disability benefits, you must have worked long enough in jobs covered by Social Security (usually 10 years). Then, you must have a medical condition that meets Social Security’s definition of disability.
The Social Security Administration can tell you if you have enough years of work to be eligible for benefits. To be disabled, you have to have physical or mental conditions that make it impossible to work, considering your age, education, and work experience. Also, the conditions must be expected to last for at least one year, or be fatal.
If you think you may qualify for disability, you can apply online, by phone, or in person.
